Raton, FL (April 18, 2003) - The Centre for the
Arts at Mizner Park is pleased to announce the recipients
of the Centres first annual Music Scholarship
Competition named The Michael and Madelyn Savarick
Annual Music Scholarship Competition for orchestral
instruments, piano and voice. The scholarship auditions,
which were open to all students from middle school through
graduate school and were held on March 22nd and produced
the following winners: $3,000 Award: Qin Han,
piano (sponsor - Michael & Madelyn Savarick Trust);
$1,000 Award: Pornphan Banternghansa, piano (sponsor
-Paul & Joan Gallo), James Barry, saxophone (sponsor
- Burt & Roberta Bronheim), Yang Lu, violin (sponsor-
Al & Kit Maroone) and Andrei Moiseyev, trumpet (sponsor
- Bernie and Sandra Meyer); $500 Award: Anne
Chicheportiche, violin (sponsor - Marie Iandoli), Alex
Fink, cello (sponsor - Juliette Ezagui), Sylvia Kim,
violin (sponsor - Leon, Ellie & Paul Carman), Danut
Muresan, violin (sponsor - Siemon & Larsen, P.A.),
Marta Murvai, violin (sponsor - Laraine & Marvin
Satisky), Erica Peel, flute (sponsor - Jeanne Sankin),
Dmitri Pogorelov, violin (sponsor - Yvonne Boice), Kristi
Rostad, harp (sponsor - Mr. and Mrs. William O. Rockwood),
Robert Vagi, tuba (sponsor - Gayl & James Hackett),
Girard Villanueva, clarinet (sponsor - Morris &
Charlotte Robinson) and Yi Zhang, piano (Mr. & Mrs.
Sam Sadler). Additional event donors included Tiffany
& Donald Fitzhenry, Sylvia Galazan, Floss Keesely,
Lynn University, Kay Murphy, Bob Luptak and The Steinway
Piano Gallery of Boca Raton.
On
Sunday, March 23rd, all scholarship sponsors, donors,
volunteers, student competition winners and their families
were invited to attend an awards luncheon held on stage
at the Centres Count de Hoernle Amphitheater in
Mizner Park. The scholarship award certificates were
distributed at the luncheon by the sponsors of each
scholarship. Donors such as Madelyn Savarick are
what make music education accessible to the youth of
today as its availability in the public school system
steadily declines stated Joan Gallo, chair of
the Competition.
We were thankful to have the participation of
our very talented judges, states Joan Gallo. The
judges include Leonid Treer, Music Professor from Florida
Atlantic University; David Alt, Professor of Music,
Chairman of the Department of Vocal Performance and
Program Director for Musical Theatre at the University
of Miami; John David Smith, Principal Horn of the Florida
Philharmonic Orchestra and Anna Kudresca, Private Cello
Instructor and former Music Professor at the University
of Poland.
The
Centre for the Arts at Mizner Park is a not-for-profit
organization, dedicated to creating a cultural heart
for the entire South Florida community, located at Mizner
Park in Boca Raton. The Centre is currently developing
a three phase project on the north end parcel of land
at Mizner Park, which when completed, will include the
Count de Hoernle outdoor Amphitheater (Phase II) which
opened to the public in November 2002 and the indoor
performing arts hall and arts education building (Phase
III). The Boca Raton Museum of Art (Phase I), located
to the west of the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater opened
to the public in January 2001.
