The New Amphitheater: Programming
BOCA
RATON, FL The heart
of the Centre for the Arts
is the new outdoor Amphitheater
and Concert Green. It will
host musical, dance, and theatrical
events for thousands of residents
and visitors. Since the original
Amphitheater opened in 1990,
the north end of Mizner Park
has become an extraordinarily
popular site for free concerts
and community events. Yet,
it lacks the technical capabilities
and public amenities needed
for success. The new Amphitheater
will solve these problems
and enable the facility to
provide extensive programming
for the community.
The
new Amphitheater and Concert
Green will be the site of
a growing number of performances.
The City's existing programming
of 17 events will continue,
through an operating agreement
with the City. The new facility
will be much more efficient
and less costly to use with
its built-in sound and lighting
systems and performer and
public amenities. The
existing performances by the
Boca Pops and the Florida
Philharmonic will be enhanced
and other groups now appearing
at the existing Amphitheater,
local high school bands, Ballet
Florida and Boca Ballet Theater,
the Boca Brass and touring
U.S. military bands, will
find a more attractive site
in which to present themselves
to the people of Boca Raton.
Community events on the Concert
Green, such as "Meet Me Downtown,"
"Halloween Happenings" and
"Spring Fling" will continue
to attract thousands of visitors
to Mizner Park.
There
are many opportunities for
new programming. Key to new
programming at the Amphitheater
will be achieving the principle
goals of the Centre: education
and enhanced variety for the
community. Regular children's
programs on Saturday morning,
for example, would allow the
Amphitheater to bring a level
of cultural life to children
not currently available in
the schools. Such programming
could be enhanced by activities
integrated into the school
curriculum and cross programming
with the Boca Raton Museum
of Art, adjacent to the Amphitheater.
Summer schools, camps and
other instructional programs
introducing children to the
visual and performing arts
could become a major ingredient
to programming at the Amphitheater.
Additional
programming could incorporate
theater, popular music, ballet,
film festivals, recitals,
pageants, graduations, and
lectures. These additional
programming opportunities
could be "free" (if sufficient
underwriting is obtained)
or paid for by tickets and
could include galas and fund
raising events by local not-for-profit
groups.
Numerous
innovative programs can be
offered by collaborating with
other non-profit organizations.
Some small producing organizations
(such as a theater company
for hearing impaired children)
are particularly effective
at delivering programs to
special constituencies but
lack the rehearsal and performance
facilities to produce their
work in a professional setting.
The Amphitheater can "incubate"
these small groups to encourage
both artistic growth and education.
The Concert Green will accommodate
up to 5,000 persons. The size
of the stage, as well as back
stage amenities, will allow
nearly any type of performance.
